We the Manatee-Sarasota Building Industry Association (MSBIA) and our fishing tournament Sarasota Slam, has been implicated by association with a now infamous video of 3 young men dragging a shark by boat. The video tape footage revealed one of the men in the video was wearing one of our fishing shirts, they are not a member of the MSBIA. We are making this statement because our association has been under attack via social media, emails and phone calls from the public and from media outlets, both local and beyond. We want the public to know that the MSBIA does not stand for nor condones this type of behavior and has been swift in its actions in banning these young men from participating in the Sarasota Slam. We are providing information to the Florida State Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC), and cooperating with their investigation. We will be not providing any names, or any other information, except to the appropriate authorities. We take pride that our tournament is safe and family friendly, donates a portion of proceeds to charity, and follows all NOAA and Billfish Foundation rules and regulations. We expect all anglers in the tournament to also comply with FWC Commission rules and regulations.

Members,
If you missed it, this last Tuesday night we held our annual Associates Appreciation & Trade Show at the Bradenton Convention Center. In total, we had 70 booths that consisted of Suppliers, Trades and Builders. By all accounts there were over 500 people in attendance, many that are not members . . . yet. Prior to the show we held our Building Official Forum, where contractors and tradesman were able to ask specific questions about permitting and inspections, as well as hear updates on the respective building departments.
We were also blessed to have elected officials in attendance - Vanessa Baugh and Priscilla Whisenant Trace from the Manatee County Commission, and those seeking election – Betsy Benac and Stephen Jonsson for Manatee County Commission, and Ed Viltz for Manatee County School Board. What is important to note is the willingness of our public officials, both elected and appointed, to be engaged with our membership.
In addition to the fun of the Trade Show we were able to donate $2,000 to the Harvest House from proceeds from the Sarasota Slam Fishing Tournament in August, many thanks to the hands that made that possible!
When we talk to people about becoming members in the BIA, use your experiences such as the Trade Show. There are many good reasons to be a member of the BIA, including government advocacy, business-to-business advantages, membership rebates with national suppliers and vendors, and the simplest of answer is . . .. friendship and belonging. Belonging to an association of those in the building industry should be the easiest “sales pitch” you can make about membership.
Next month on October 6, is B3: Beer, Brauts & Buddies, a social here at the BIA offices. Bring a non-member to introduce them to your association, show them the value of belonging.
Sincerely,

Jon
